  • Network Inventory Management in OSS

    Posted November 5, 2009

Network Inventory Management is the most important component in the OSS architecture. If you disagree with me...just think about it for a second.  How can carriers provision new service orders from customers (or subscribers depending who you are) if the carrier does not have a fundamental ...

in the topic Australian National Broadband Network in the forum General Discussion
I’ve been working in Australia for the past few years and for those of you who haven’t heard, the Australian Government plans on investing over $40 billion (AUD) to deliver ‘superfast’ broadband access network accessible to 90% of Australians. This initiative will be the single largest nation building infrastructure project in Australian history.   The goal of the NBN is to ensure that every house, school and business in Australia has access to broadband connectivity.
There are plenty of controversial components associated with this initiative in Australia – some of which include the necessity – is it really necessary to build this with tax payer money? Secondly, will Telstra accept the Australian Government’s demand to structurally separate? Who knows, time (and possibly a long time) will tell.
I’d be very interested in hearing everyone’s thought on this. I’d like to make this a very interactive discussion. To kick off the discussion, what are your thoughts on the following:
    1.       Telstra could match the Broadband speed of the upcoming NBN using their Cable broadband infrastructure – where service can deliver 100Mbps thanks to new technology, including DOCSIS 3.0 – given this….is there really a need?
    2.       What experiences/warnings/issues/etc. have you experienced while working on a National Broadband Network implementation?
    3.       Will $40 billion and 8 years be enough to accomplish this?
    4.       Etc.
    5.       Etc.

in the topic Who are the major network inventory players? in the forum OSS
I want to reassure myself that I still have a solid understanding of who the key network inventory players are in the OSS space.  If I have forgotten or am missing any, please let me know!!!  Please note, I'm not listing them in any particular order

    1. Netcracker
    2. Telcordia (Granite)
    3. Cramer
    4. Visionael
    5. Clarity OSS
    6. MetaSolv
I'm sure there are more products out there (and hundreds of other home grown applications), but I think the major players are the ones that I've listed above.  Let me know if I'm missing any!!!

in the topic Will the landscape in 2010 be better??? in the forum OSS
As we begin to ramp down 2009...I wondering if the new year will bring momentum for us 'Telco Professionals'.  I'm interested in hearing your predictions for 2010...
    1. Will the global economic recession continue to reduce carrier spend in 2010?
    2. Are the large-scale 'Transformation' programs a thing of the past for carriers?
    3. Will mobile banking finally take off?
    4. Any predictions for the National Broadband Network initiatives in Singapore and Australia?
    5. Etc.
I think this topic could drive a lot of discussion; let me know what you think.

    All the best in 2010!

in the topic Implementing Network Inventory....why reinvent the wheel? in the forum OSS
Do you ever find yourself having déjà vu over and over and over again while helping telecommunication carriers implement OSS products and solutions?  I do...

I’ve been involved in numerous network inventory implementations …spanning nearly all of the major software players…and each have the exact same struggles when it comes to implementation…lack of system requirements, the time it takes to model metadata (devices, circuits, etc.) process automation, etc.  I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts on whether or not it’s possible for carriers to partner together to share best practices, automation modules, device model templates, etc.

    Why reinvent the wheel?!?
